History: The Nor West Jockey Club claims to be the second oldest country race club in Western Australia. The club's first race meeting was held in August 1867 when four races were run under WATC rules on a course where the town site of Wickham now stands. The Roebourne Plate valued at fifteen pounds was the main race run over a distance of a mile, and the Publicans Purse was worth ten pounds.

In 1890 the course was moved to its present location. The feature race that year was the 'Great Northern Handicap' which attracted many of the top horses in the North West. During a period when Nor West bred horses were winning feature races in Perth the Nor West Jockey Club race meetings were the feature social event in the North West.

Racing ceased during the two world wars and in the 1970's the club witnessed the demise of the traditional grass and grain fed races as horses were used less on the stations with the arrival of the motorbike and helicopters for mustering. However, the local community encouraged trainers to visit the Pilbara from the south of the state and racing continues to thrive every year at Roebourne and the Roebourne Cup remains one of the much valued races to win on the annual North West circuit.
